A sombre, grey and foggy December morning in Venice. A vaporetto emerges from the dense mist, heading towards the Ferrovia ferry stop. I’m on another vaporetto – route no. 1 – heading towards St. Mark’s Square along the entire length of the Grand Canal, trying to get the absolute most out of the 24-hour tourist ticket I’d purchased the day before. Acqua alta had arrived overnight, and water was lapping at the door of many Venetian landmarks, St. Mark’s among them.
