“The most amazing thing about Pompeii is that it is an entire town, filled with all the things you’d expect to see in a big city – government buildings, places of worship, public squares, busy roads, shops, baths, stadiums and theatres, houses both big and small and more. This is not just a few ruined buildings scattered around, it is a snapshot of an ancient civilisation, and it is surprisingly familiar and modern.”
— from my travel diary
Pompeii’s main street, leading from the Forum all the way through to the Porta di Sarno on the other side of the city. I spent over half a day exploring this amazing site and still didn’t get to see half of it. I never made it as far as the stadium, for example. There’s something about this photo that I’ve always liked – the simple composition, the people in shadow reminiscent of ghosts of the past, and the feeling of sombre melancholy that permeates the entire site. Of course, I was there in December – hardly peak period for visitation!
